FUNCTIONAL CAPACITY EVALUATIONS / PRE-PLACEMENT POST OFFER TESTING
A functional capacity evaluation (FCE) is a set of tests, activities and observations that are quantified to determine the ability of the client/patient to perform objectively in a variety of circumstances, particularly in a work environment.
Functional Capacity Evaluations are used for a variety of reasons. One can use an FCE to develop a treatment program, to measure the physical abilities of patients before and after a rehabilitation program, to modify treatment, to determine if an individual is able to work, to evaluate whether an injured worker can work, and to determine when he/she can return to work.
The worker must be able to perform specific tasks related to their particular job activities. Work related tasks involve varying postures and positions, as well as, differing strength and flexibility requirements in order for the employees to accomplish their duties in a safe manner.
FCEs typically require the evaluator to determine the worker's capability to perform various work-related tasks and whether there is a match between these abilities and the essential job performance components. An FCE is a tool to quantify and qualify these job requirements in a controlled and safe environment.
Because physical therapists are experts at evaluating an individual's ability to perform activities, skilled at analyzing work tasks, and able to measure the wide range of environmental factors that can affect work performance, they are well qualified to perform FCEs and pre-employment screening tests.
